BioThane® Care Guide
-
We make all of our collars and leashes with genuine BioThane® Beta 520 material.
It is weather, mud and waterproof and easy to clean with just a little soap and water.
We recommend that you do not machine wash your leashes or collars as the hardware may scratch during the process.

How to clean - in 5 easy steps
1. Put your leash or collar in the sink and get some soap and a non abrasive sponge ready.
2. Run some warm water and use the soap to make a nice bubble bath for your leash/collar. Use the sponge to wipe off any dirt on your leash.
3. Marvel at the ease of cleaning and the comparison from dirty to clean.
4. Remove the leash from the water and dry off with a rag or towel.
5. And voila! You should have restored your vibrant and colourful leash.

BioThane® that is matched with brass hardware
- BioThane® that is matched with brass hardware may slightly discolour the BioThane® over time due to the natural tarnishing of brass over time.
- These stains can be lightened with a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda or salt. Make a paste and apply it with a soft cloth to the areas you wish to lighten. Rinse off and repeat where necessary then dry with a cloth.
- We also recommend that you give your BioThane® product a rinse after it has been used in saltwater.

Disclaimer
- While it's rare, BioThane® (the top coating) can sometimes react with certain chemicals, lotions, and even body oils from humans or pets. This might cause the coating to crack or dry up. If that happens, don’t worry – the polyester webbing inside is still good as long as there’s no damage to the polyester webbing itself.
BioThane® is a special proprietary coating over standard polyester webbing, which is also common for dog collars and leashes. - BioThane® does recommend giving it a clean every now and then, to keep the chemicals, lotions and oils off to help reduce this issue. Plus, it never hurts to keep things fresh! Relative to other materials out there like polyester and leather, it is still lower in maintenance (and consistently strong). Leather has its perks, but it needs regular treatment and cleaning to stay in top shape.
- BioThane® Beta 520 is a top pick for pet products, but if you're concerned about these reactions, other makers offer alternatives like Granite or Gold BioThane® (TPU). These are fantastic options!

Special Care for Neon Colours:
It is possible for some BioThane® neon colours to bleed onto other colours so it is best to store them apart if possible.

Caring for hardware:
Brass plated, nickel plated and even stainless steel hardware may rust over time if left in the elements for too long. Rainbow, rose gold and black hardware can lose colour over time. Other than the brass, stainless steel hardware, the rest are made of zinc alloy, rust-resistant & functional.
To keep your hardware looking nice and shiny for as long as possible:• Dry or hang to dry after it has been used in wet conditions.
• Do not clean with a wire brush or tools that may remove the coating.
• Do not machine wash as it may scratch the hardware.
Brass inevitably tarnishes and patinas over time. Some folks do like the look of this 'antique' finish but if you want to restore it's shine, there are plenty of tips on the internet that you can find from making your own DIY mixtures to store bought agents. For more general information on hardware, see our Hardware Guide.
